DOMESTIC SEWAGE
• Domestic Sewage is the waste stream from kitchen wastes, dish
& clothes washer wastes, and human wastes.
• Domestic sewage comes from all the homes and
businesses in the area.
• Domestic sewage collects in pipes and then flows to the
wastewater treatment facility.

PRELIMINARY TREATMENT
• By the time the sewage gets to this stage
there are few chunks but those few
chunks are eliminated.
• Here the domestic sewage collects and
flows through a bar screen and then a
macerator, to grind the large chunks into
small bits.

AERATION BASIN
• After the preliminary
treatment the sewage is
pumped into the aeration
basin. The sewage is mixed
with activated sludge and
air is pumped in.
• Bacteria is also added to
consume the domestic
sewage.

CLARIFIER
• After the bacteria consumes
most of the sewage a clearish
liquid is left. It is pumped to
the clarifier.
• The clarifier separates the
liquids.

DISINFECTION
(Gas chlorination)
• Here the clearish liquid is completely disinfected.
• The gas chlorination is very toxic.

• Here the water is as clean as it
will get at a wastewater
treatment facility.
• The water is sent off into rivers,
creaks, etc.

• Here more air is pumped in
for about 30 days. Then the
air is turned off and the
sewage separates into layers.
• The top and bottom layers,
called sludge, are a brownish
color and are pumped to the
2nd stage digester. The middle
layer is a clearish color and is
returned to the aeration basin.

• At this point more air is pumped into the sludge.
• The liquid then settles and is then taken and put
into the drying beds.

• Here the sludge and
biosolids are put into
these beds to dry. Thy
become like a thick

COMPOSTING BIOSOLIDS
• After the sludge and
biosolids have dried it is
mixed with wood chips.
• This forms human manure
which is very rich in
minerals.
