•Fifth Grade Space: developing the concept
of Gravity.
Tips:
•
-Teachers, please read through the whole
presentation prior to the activity.
-Each activity is meant to be used in addition to
your classroom teaching.
-Each activity includes a journal component.
•Objective: TSW be introduced to the
concepts of Gravity.
What
goes
up,
must
come
down!
1643-1727
Sir Isaac Newton
decided that this
statement was true.
Describe how he
made his discovery.

Nicholaus
Copernicus
(1473-1543)
In 1543,
Nicholaus
Copernicus
came up with
the idea that
the Sun was at
the heart of
the Solar
System and
the planets
revolve
around it.
Tycho Brahe
(1546-1601)
November
11, 1572, he
wandered
out of his
workshop
and glanced
up at the
night sky. He
saw an extra
star in a
constellation
overhead.
Johannes
Kepler (15711630)
Kepler
discovered
that the Earth
and the other
planets in
our Solar
System
travel around
the Sun in
elliptical
orbits.
Take a few notes --->
Issac Newton
(1643-1727)
Issac Newton
confirmed it to
be true. Just as
the Moon around
the Earth, the
planets in our
Solar System are
held in motion
around the Sun
by gravity.
Re-arrange the
astronomers below in the
order in which they made
their discoveries.

EXTRA: What was the significance
of Brahe’s observation?
