Scientific Method
Mr. Holcomb’s Class
What is the Scientific Method?
It is a process that is
used to find the
answers to questions
about the world
around us.
Is there only one “Scientific Method”?
No, there are several
versions of the scientific
method. Some versions
have more steps, while
others may have only a
few.
Is there only one “Scientific Method”?
However, they all begin with the
identification of a problem or a
question to be answered based on
observations of the world around
us and provide an organized
method for conducting and
analyzing an experiment.
What is a hypothesis?
It is an educated
guess based on
observations and
your knowledge of
the topic.
What is data?
It is information
gathered during
an experiment.

3.
Identify the Problem
(Ask a question)
Form a Hypothesis
Create an Experiment

6.
Perform an Experiment (Test
the Hypothesis)
Analyze the Data (Analyze
Results & Draw Conclusions)
* Modify the Experiment
Communicate Results
The Strange case of BeriBeri
1.
2.
3.
The problem is BeriBeri disease.
The hypothesis is that the disease
was caused by bacteria.
The hypothesis was tested by
using a control group of chickens
NOT injected with bacteria and
an experiment group injected with
bacteria.
The Strange case of BeriBeri
4.
5.
The hypothesis would be rejected
because both the control and
experiment group got sick.
The new hypothesis should be
chickens feed whole grain rice would
not get sick. (In other words, repeat
the same experiment except just feed
the chicken whole grain rice.
How Penicillin Was Discovered

8.
What did the Staph die from?
Fleming hypothesized that the
mold must be producing a
chemical that killed the bacteria.
Fleming decided to isolate the
mold to see if it would kill the
Staph.
How Penicillin Was Discovered
The hypothesis should be
accepted because the mold
did kill the bacteria.
10. This discovery lead to the
development of Penicillin.
