Microbiology – Big Ideas
1. Groups of microorganisms have common
characteristics, and these characteristics
enable them to interact with other organisms
in the environment.
2. Microorganisms can have both positive and
negative effects on the environment.
3. The technological use of microorganisms
raises many ethical issues.
What is Microbiology?
• Micro = Small
• Bio = Life
• The study of small
living things
• So small the naked
eye cannot see
them and we need
a microscope
• (Microorganisms)
…such as ?
Illness and Microorganisms
• Remember the last time you were sick or
were suffering from an illness:
1. What was the illness?
2. What caused the illness?
3. Did you take medication? If so, what?
4. On a scale of 1 – 10, how much did it suck?
5. Dare I ask…how did you contract it?
Microorganisms make us SICK!
•Viruses
•Bacteria
• These are very
small cells,
smaller then
humans cells
These microorganisms are only around a “micron” (μm) big,
or one millionth of a metre.
Mr. Tammemagi’s Latest Illness
• Strep Throat
• Streptococcus bacteria
If I’m not sick anymore, why am I still taking medication?
Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria
• “Super Bugs” are created when some
bacteria cells are not killed by antibiotics
• When these bacteria cells multiply, their
offspring are all resistant to antibiotics.
We are SWIMMING in bacteria
Eukaryotic Cells Vs. Prokaryotic Cells
All cells on the planet are either eukaryotic (“true nucleus”) or
prokaryotic (“before nucleus”).
prokaryotic cells DO NOT have a defined Nucleus,
their genetic material floats freely around the cytoplasm of their cell.
Prokaryotic Cells Also…
•
•
•
•
Smaller less then 5 µm in diameter
Less complex and advanced
More primitive and simple
Do not have Mitochondria, vacuoles or
chloroplasts
• Have only a single chromosome
• Reproduce through “binary fission”
