•live in water
•3 types:
• Protozoa
• Algae
• Slime moulds.

Algae
Slime mould
1. Protozoans –
Animal-like Protists
•
2 kinds:
i) Amoeba

•
feed on small organisms like
bacteria, engulf them.
are able to move
ii) Paramecium
found in pond water
 move around by using cilia (hairlike covering).

2. Algae (Plant-Like Protists)
chlorophyll-containing
• range in size from single cells to
giant seaweeds 60 metres in
length.
• could be classified as plants,
except lack leaves, stems, roots.
• Algae
•
i) Brown Algae
multicellular
 many species can be quite large
 ex Kelp

ii) Diatoms
small
 unicellular
 over 10, 000 species.

iii) Red Algae
multicellular
 found in warmer seawater
 is toxic, kills many fish

3.
Slime Moulds and Water Moulds
•
are similar to fungi (produce
spores), plants (have cellulose
cell walls) and animals (glide
around to ingest food) in some
ways.
•
they generally live off of
decaying matter.

Protist Parasites
parasite:
 something that lives inside and harms its
host
host:
 what the parasite infects
vector:
 an organism that carries a parasite and
infects other things with it
Malaria
plasmodium
 mosquitos are vector
 lives in bloodstream and can kill host if not
treated
 1.5 – 2 million deaths/yr (more than AIDS)
 prevented with bednets
 treated with anti-malarial drugs

Trypanosoma
cause African Sleeping Sickness
 vector is Tse Tse fly
 can infect the nervous system, killing
the host


Giardia
parasite in
untreated
drinking water
 lives in digestive
system
 causes severe
vomiting and
diarrhea

Cryptosporidium
parasite in
infected water
 causes diarrhea
 forms a hard
spore that’s
difficult to kill
