4 Tips to Follow to ensure
successful note taking with out
plagiarizing

Paraphrase
*Do not copy and paste information
*Paraphrasing is good for supporting
information, biographical
information, predictions, hypothesis,
and drawing conclusions
*HOWEVER, it still must be in
YOUR OWN words!
*Make sure to cite your notes for
paraphrasing
Summarize
*Read a paragraph then summarize it
in your own words in 1-2 sentences
*Summarizing is usually for
beginning research for general
information on your topic
*Your summarization still must be
cited unless it is all common
knowledge/facts
Copy & Paste
*Copy & Pasting can save time if
you are taking notes electronically
*Copying and pasting is acceptable
for very small pieces of text like
specific details, facts, definitions,
and statistics
*Most of the time it need not be cited
if it is common knowledge, but
should be cited if it is a new or
unique view on the topic
Direct Quotes
*Quotes are perfect for one or two
sentence statements for backing up your
stance or the point you’re trying to make
*Quotes work well for: diaries, journals,
speeches, interviews, letters, memos,
manuscripts, memoirs and
autobiographies
*You must use quotation marks around
the statements and cite them correctly
according to MLA format (in text
citations/footnotes and works cited)
Avoiding Plagiarism
*Remember as you are taking notes
in different formats (paraphrasing,
summarizing, copying & pasting, and
direct quotations that you mark page
numbers and make a note of what
you are using the notes for (what
format)—this way you know what is
a direct quote, what is paraphrased,
what is summarized and what is
copied & pasted and where it came
from!
Ways to Take Notes
*Use paper and pencil/pen:
Dash facts (-), star facts, *facts
*Use your notepad feature on your
iPod phone or touch
*Use Microsoft Word/Excel
*Create your own template
*Find a template online

Keep your notes organized

*the source (title, author, publication, date, URL,
*any other information needed for citing)
*subject of source
*abstract (your notes—paraphrase)

them so you know where and when to
use them and for what
What’s the Point?
The point is:
*Organization is key
*Remember not to literally copy & paste (only
with the one exception)
*Remember to READ the information first and
then…
*Remember to paraphrase & summarize in
YOUR OWN WORDS!
*Remember to cite everything that is required!
*Remember to keep track of your notes—
where they came from, what part of your paper
they are for and how you plan on using them!
