Biophysical approaches for nanomedicine
• Single-molecule biophysics
to detect conformational states of a single molecule such as
misfolded protein during aggregation.
• Advanced microscopic techniques
to probe at molecular level the interaction of nanoparticles
within complex biological systems (cells, tissue and organs).
An important requirement for nanomedicine is that
these techniques must be rapid, inexpensive and non invasive for
in vitro and in vivo diagnostics.
Among these techniques: FT-IR microspectroscopy
FT-IR study of protein aggregate nanoparticles
Possible prion strain identification
in tissues containing PrPSc deposits - brain and lymphoid
organs (Kretlow et al. BBA 2006).
Protein aggregation in recombinant bacteria
for the production of heterologous proteins in form of
inclusion bodies (IBs).
IBs can be internalised by eukaryotic cells.
Biologically active molecules, trapped within IBs, can be
released in the target cells (Gonzalez-Montalban et al. Microbial
Cell Factories 2006).
