Global Recalls and the
Effect They Have on Our
Society
What is a Food Recall?
A recall is the act of requesting the return
of a commercial product to the retailer or
manufacturer because of a defect or a
safety or efficiency problem.
We have recalls to protect people from the
danger of unsafe products.
Recent recalls in the United States
Many peanut butter products such as
products found at the Peanut Corporation of
America, were recalled recently because of
salmonella found in the products was making
people ill.
8 people have died and more than
500 were sickened.
There have been 205
cases of illness and 5
people have died because
of the salmonella
Pistachio nuts have been recently recalled due to
salmonella found during a routine testing by
Kraft foods. The nuts came from Setton Farms,
in California. This recall has no relation to the
salmonella outbreak in peanuts, because in this
case, they discovered the salmonella before
products could reach consumers. This case
shows how important these recalls are to
consumers, it will hopefully prevent illness.
Recent Recalls in China
In China, there have been recent cases of
tainted beef and milk that have been affecting
many people.
In 2003, over 10,000 pounds of beef said to have
mad cow disease was banned in the U.S.
Inspectors found that 10% of China's liquid milk
was tainted with melamine. 4 infants have died
and over 6,000 are sick.
Other Recall Stories
Irish Pork
There are fears that pork is
contaminated with cancer causing
chemicals called dioxins. Consumers
have been warned not to eat any Irish
pork or bacon products since September
2008.
Effects on People
Food recalls have a number of effects on the
people of the world. They need to learn how
to be informed about potential dangers and
take precautions to prevent diseases starting
and spreading. If we didn’t have recalls, there
would be much more danger of sickness from
food. They are an important part of the food
industry, but even so, consumers should
always be aware.
Effects on Industry
Recalls sometimes cause businesses to lose
profit. Sales go down for similar products to
those being recalled, even if those products
are found to be safe.
❀ Be aware- if you don’t buy contaminated food, you wont eat
it and get sick.
❀ Wash produce- you can prevent some bacteria by
thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables.
❀ Cook your food- you can kill bacteria and reduce the
chance of getting sick by cooking food correctly. Also
separate raw meats and other food before cooking or the
bacteria could spread
❀ Listen to recalls- don’t ignore them. They are for your
safety. We have them for a reason.
