Other Heavenly Bodies
What is a Heavenly Body?


Anything in the heavens other than our
planets
These Heavenly Bodies include, but are
not limited to:
 Pluto
 Comets
 Asteroids
 Meteoroids
Pluto






Rocky “terrestrial”
composition
Approximately 39 AUs
from the Sun
One moon, Charon
No rings
Counter-clockwise
rotation around Sun
Now referred to as a
“dwarf” planet because it
is so small and does not
clear its own path for orbit
Comets


Small objects made
mainly of ice with bits
of rock and metal
Usually have very
long, elliptical orbits
Asteroids


Too small and too
numerous to be
considered fullfledged planets.
Most revolve around
the sun between the
orbits of Mars and
Jupiter. (the asteroid
belt)
Meteoroids




A chunk of rock or dust in
space
Usually come from comets
or asteroids
A meteor is the streak of
light we see in the sky due
to friction when a meteoroid
enters Earth’s atmosphere
(shooting star).
When a meteoroid passes
through the atmosphere
and hits Earth’s surface, it is
called a meteorite.
