Background Information
• This ad was published by The American Cancer
Society to promote skin cancer awareness
• The American Cancer Society was founded in
1913 in New York by a group of 15 physicians
and business leaders
• The organization is community-based and
voluntary, focused on finding cures for Cancer
What’s the focal point?
The focal point is the woman and the words “My
brother accidentally killed himself.” That’s the
focal point because it catches your attention and
makes you want to read on about how her brother
accidentally killed himself.
Whose the intended audience for this
ad?
The intended audience is anyone who stays out in
the sun or does outdoor activities, especially
those who don’t wear sun screen.
What if you removed the words?
If you removed the words from this ad, you
wouldn’t know what the ad was about or what the
purpose of the woman holding the picture.
Logos
Logically, nobody wants skin cancer. With the
public being more aware of the damage the sun
can do to our bodies, the obvious choice would be
wearing sun screen.
Ethos
This ad gets it’s credibility from the American
Cancer Society logo in the bottom right corner.
Since they are a well known organization focused
on the treatment of Cancer and their overall goal
is to eliminate cancer, this ad is credible.
Pathos
Since most people have a sibling, or someone
close like a sibling, they would empathize with
the woman in the ad.
