Accomplishments to Date
January 2006
• Added mission statement to WelchWeb
• Added accessibility statement to
WelchWeb
• Implemented standards compliant
version of WelchWeb (reached Goal 1)
February 2006 • Created usage tracking mechanism for
analyzing usage of navigational links

Current Projects
1. Identify all WelchWeb content contributors.
2. Create a single point of entry for users to
retrieve information by subject.
3. Make the website’s navigation more userfriendly.
4. Produce a cohesive online presence for
the library’s website and other internetbased services.
Project 1
Identify content owners for all WelchWeb
pages.
Solution: Keep a master list of content
contributors on the Intranet.
Project 2
Create a single point of entry for users to
retrieve information by subject.
Solution: Consolidate subject guides
created by liaison librarians with
subject guides created by digital
library services to create a single
point of entry for patrons seeking
information on a particular
subject. See prototype.
Project 3
Make the navigation more user-friendly.
Solution: Move navigation to the top of the
page. See prototype.
Project 4
Set guidelines for the library’s websites to
create a consistent, unified presence that
revolves around our users.
“The advantages of consistent graphic design and
user interface standards are immediately obvious
in a user-centered approach to Web design and
clearly transcend the parochial interests of
participating departments, groups, and
individuals.”
~ Web Style Guide, 2nd edition
To date, the library has produced websites in a
somewhat piece meal fashion, resulting in a
hodgepodge of different designs and user interfaces.
Solution: Create a Web style guide that sets
forth consistent graphic design
and user interface standards.
Establish procedural guidelines for
future web development.
Decision-Making Process
We propose the following:
1. Committee puts forth proposal along with the decision criteria
upon which it is based. (Proposal may have originated with
staff or groups outside of the committee.)
2. Committee solicits broad input from department(s) affected by
the proposal. If everyone in the library is affected, such as in
Project 4, than the committee will consult the department
heads group.
3. Committee considers input in relation to decision criteria.
4. Committee makes a decision, explicitly sharing the reasons for
making its decision.
