E-Portfolio Vocabulary

Hardware
The
parts of your computer such
as the monitor, tower and keyboard
Software
Anything
that can be stored
electronically
desktop
The desktop is the screen where all
your icons are located. You can move
items on your computer’s desktop,
much like you can move items on an
actual desk.
Internet
Web
sites created by individuals,
institutions, and companies are
published and can be accessed by
anyone with Internet service
anywhere in the world. Those web
sites are hosted (stored) on servers.
Intranet
Web
sites created by individuals that
can only be looked at from within a
certain area. If you create an
intranet website from within the
school, it can only be viewed in the
school.
Click
What
you do to tell the mouse
what you want the computer to do.
Single click everything except icons
Double-Click
Push
your mouse two times
quickly on icons. Single click
everything else.
(Don’t be a clicking Maniac!)
Maximize
To
make the window as large as
possible
Minimize
To
make the window as small as
possible.
Scroll Bar
To
cause (displayed text or graphics) to
move up, down, or across the screen so
that a line of text or graphics appears at
one edge of the screen for each line
that moves off the opposite edge: scroll
a document; scroll a page of text.
Tool Bar
The
row of buttons across the top of
your browser window that includes
the most commonly used commands.
Drive
The
part of your computer that a CD
goes into.
Hard Drive
Your
computer’s main storage area.
When
you save something to the
drive it remains on that computer
Browser
A
program that you use to surf the
internet such as Firefox, Safari or
Internet Explorer.
