Do we know power hidden in the library?
Libraries for education

Main items
•
•
•
•
do we know what we have in library?
what is rate of utilization?
can we “mine” more?
what we can do another way
Hidden power

external resources
internal resources
philosophy of services
philosophy of processing
External information resources
• information resources access
1. traditional approach
• resources provide separately
• different language, different environment
• principle: we provide access other is up to user
2. new approach
• external resources integration into online catalogue
• unified language, unified environment + link to original
resource
• principle: we provide information (this is not knowledges)
External information resources
External information resources
Internal information resources
1. publication activities
• i.e. full review of teachers activities
• problem is – database is separately, there is no
connection with information on the web of department
2. literature for education
• problem is – information about document availability isn’t
accessible from the web of departments
3. thesis
• i.e. review about thesis realized
• problem is – information about thesis is missing, thesis
are registered separately, full text is missing, there is no
connection with information on the web of department
Philosophy of services
1. traditional approach
• borrow, copies, search
• services limited by opening hours
• document acquirement is enough for user; if user wants to
have something, he will come; user knows services and
he will fit for
2. new approach
• electronic services
• user has more personalized possibilities
• services fit to users; user have choice; he gets information
everywhere and everytime
• Library for you, Library can solve your problem
• Web 2.0, Web 3.0, Library 2.0
Philosophy of processing
1. traditional approach
• document processing – basic description + some indexing
• authorities are used “in temperance” and “by force”
• context isn’t followed up
2. new approach
• document processing as complex information object –
processing of elements with connection to authorities
• authorities with additional values
• factual database instead of catalogue
• user orientation – in processing too
Web 2.0
characteristic services: Google with Search, Maps, Gmail, Calendar;
AdSense, Wikipedia, Blogy, RSS, YouTube, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Last,
CalendarHub, MashUp,...
• services for content creating – wiki, blogy, odkazy, fotky, videá, hudba
• services for sources aggregation – RSS, ATOM, ...
• services for tagging, folksonomies creation, evaluation...
Internet evolution – Web 3.0, 4.0, ...

Library evolution
Library 1.0
„Read only, use only library“
• online catalogue
• loan services
• search services (search processing and )
• ...
Library 2.0
„Read/write, use/create library“
• personalization
• new technologies
• interactive services
• ...
Web 2.0 + libraries = Library 2.0 ?
Library 2.0
• new technologies application (not only)
+
• new approach of library to users and new approach of
users to library (to services, collections…)
• expansion of library area of interest
• higher quality of library web presentation, web creation in
collaboration with users
• internal changes and changes in profession
Library 2.0
Possibilities
• web services – use of information processed for
presentation
• RSS not only for library web but for catalogue too
(interactive and personalized information about news
in databases)
• library web as portal for external information
resources include federative search
• complex processing of activities in library (institution)
from idea to result and presentation
Possibilities - example
From compatibility to interoperability

Library 2.0
Premises a requirements
• standards
• object oriented approach to processing (FRAD,
FRBR, CRM…) + ontology creation
• adequate qualification (Library 2.0 in next education
too – eLearning and new technologies in education
and information transfer in institution)
• cooperation and discussion
