Creating Accounts
This course requires that you have a
“steel” account.
In IE (Internet Explorer) go to
http://itaccounts.iu.edu. Follow the
instructions to set up both accounts.
If there is a problem with your password
you may need to reset your password at
https://password.iu.edu
Using a Web Server (steel)
Run the Secure Shell application (SSH)
Connect to steel.ucs.indiana.edu

At home: you can download SSH from
iuware.indiana.edu
Once you have logged in, type “spinweb”
at the prompt and press enter. This sets
up your account for making web pages.
File Management (WinXP)



“File Cabinet” metaphor: files are arranged in
a collection of folders
Folders can contain other folders
Organizing folders allows you to find your
work later on
File Management Practice







Opening Windows Explorer (not I.E.)
Creating folders
Navigating in Windows Explorer

Moving/Renaming/Deleting Files
Copying Files
Local vs. Network

“Local” refers to storage on the hard drive of
the computer you’re working on
–
–

This allows quick access and is how you would
work on a home or office computer
Unfortunately, files in the labs are regularly wiped
clean
“Network” storage is located at a separate
location (e.g. CFS)
–
Provides safety and backups for important files
Set up WebDav




Login to Oncourse
Put a folder in either your drop box or your
Workspace
Go to your Network Connections and setup a
Network connection to your Sakai resources
folder
Use the Browser to practice moving and
copying files
Organizing WebDav folders in
Oncourse


Create an A110 folder
Create five subfolders in A110:
–
–
–
–
–
HTML
Word
Excel
Access
Service
Uploading files to steel





Open Notepad and create an example file.
Save it as test.html
Open the SFTP application
Upload test.html into the www directory
Run spinweb again (using SSH)
http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/test.html
Comparison: Local, CFS, and web
server

We have discussed three distinct places
where we can save files:
–
On a local hard drive (or floppy drive)

–
On the WebDav/Oncourse system

–
Access using the Explorer
Access using the web page (or map a drive)
On the web server “steel”

Copy files using SFTP, run “spinweb” using SSH
Wrapping Up
Account Creation: please resolve any
issues before next class
File Management Basics
Use Steel or File Manger (Oncourse) for
working on class projects
