EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM !
Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School
My name is Rick Zeller, I’m an 8th grade math teacher at
Happy Valley Elementary School in Anderson, CA.

This is an Algebra I lesson for 8th grade students or above.
Students will use the internet as directed to particular sites
to review an algebra topic. They will then present their
information, or lesson, to other students in the class.

entire class
 Students needed more individual guidance after
retrieving information from the web
 More time needed for students to prepare their own
lessons for small groups

Revisions
After reviewing the results of the pretest and the
posttest, I decided to make some changes on both
tests. I chose problems that would be very similar to
the problems students would be directed to on the
web site. I also will give students specific algebra
topics from which to choose, so that they will be more
closely aligned with the pre and posttests.

Conclusions
The emphasis on standards based lessons seems to be
a theme throughout education currently. I feel that it’s
important when using technology that standards are
included. Lessons become more meaningful with
aligned outcomes in place.
The Internet is only one part of our present technology,
but it is such a vast field of information that students
need direction when using it. I believe that through
this program, much of that direction will be put in
place as teachers add to the bank of lessons.

Conclusions continued
Having completed this course, I feel confident that I can
use my acquired skills and resources to create
additional lessons integrated with technology. I will
also be able to find standards based lessons that
others have already composed.
I would encourage other teachers to participate in future
courses. The knowledge gained is worth the time
and energy required.
