SEPARATIST MOVEMENTS Why some countries break up? QUÉBÉCOIS Who are these guys? Ethnically, how do they identify? What do they want from their government? Has their government effectively handled their concerns? RAIZAL – SEPARATISTS FROM COLOMBIA Have had an active separatist movement since the 1960’s. Were asked, by the US, to separate in 1901 when Panama did but remained part of Colombia. Feel overrun by mainland majority – Ethnically, more closely related to Jamaicans than Colombians AUSTRIAN-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE Big Important Empire in Europe Allied with Germany before WWI Official languages were German and Hungarian, but they also spoke Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Italian, Moravian, Polish, Romani, Romanian, Rusyn, Serbian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Ukrainian, & Yiddish. RUSSIA VS UKRAINE Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and only recently has Russia threatened their independence. Russia claims to be protecting the ethnically Russian within Ukraine. Is this a civil war, or a war between nations? KURDS What country is that? (Yes, we have studied it) Under 50% of the population speaks Kurdish in Light Green Over 50% of the population speaks Kurdish in Dark Green THIS FLAG IS BANNED IN TURKEY Since the 1980’s there have been both peaceful and violent attempts to establish an independent Kurdish state separate from Turkey. Turkey has barred prominent Kurdish candidates who had outstanding warrants or where part of ongoing investigations for terrorist-related crimes from standing in elections. This lead to violent protests in 2011. TIBET Tibet is home to devout Buddhists who believe in nonviolence. Ethnically different than the Chinese. In 1951, the Communist government of China annexed Tibet, and officially it is still part of China. These opposing sides have been fighting over the land since. ARAB – ISRAEL INFO/QUESTION HERE How do we overcome these problems? Should countries only exist with one major ethnicity? Why has the US been able to survive for so long without separatist movements? What are we doing right? How does our government treat minority groups/What rights doe we offer our citizens?
