1 The Spirit of Enquiry - Sun Fun
Where does the Sun get its
energy from to shine for
hundreds of millions of
years?
To answer this we need to know what is
inside the Sun!
2 What is the Sun made of?
How can I find out how
the Sun gets its energy
to shine?
3 View from a distance.
SOHO Satellite observes the Sun
Perhaps look
at the light
that it emits.
4 Sunlight Contains a Message!
We can tell a lot from star light using:
Land based
telescopes
Or
Telescopes in
space

Continuous Colours –
No gaps in the colours!
6 Emission Spectra of a Gas
Coloured Light

Only a few colours are
emitted by gas.
7 Absorption Spectra of a Gas

10 Ghost Hunters – The Search
for the Sun’s Spectra
This is our Sun’s Spectra
1. The intensity(brightness) of the the colours tells us
the temperature of the surface of the Sun.
2. The absorption lines tells us what gases are in the
Sun.
3. The Sun is mainly made of Hydrogen and Helium gas.
4. However, the Sun also contains a lot of other
elements.
11 What is the Universe made from?
It turns out that most of the Universe is
made from Hydrogen as well!
12 Hydrogen - Star “fuel”
The most abundant element in the
universe is Hydrogen.
Hydrogen was created at the start of
the Universe.
Hydrogen is used to power the stars.
