ARE YOU THE
FATHER?
A Maury Povich-style case study in Mendelian Genetics
WELCOME!
•
Today on our show, we start out with the story of a
husband and wife who have 2 children: a 3-year-old
boy and a 6-month-old daughter. The birth of any
child is a wonderful thing, but for our husband Rayjohn-bob, it may be a clue to his wife’s infidelity.
Let’s meet
Dad!
•
Ray-john-bob, Tell us what happened.
•
“Welp, you seeeee, my girl and I, we been done
gone together since we was like little kids.
Evurthang was great. We have an amazing son,
Boo-Radley, and a fishing boat. But when baby
Turlina was borned, I saw she had Brown eyes, just
like my best friend Harley. We’s all got blue eyes,
which is rurcessive, I hears. I thinks that she’s been
cheating on me behind my back, when I’m out
trapping possum.”
Let’s hear
from Mom!
•
Come on out Mary-sue-roberta!
•
Ray-john-bob, I ain’t been cheatin’! When you’re out
gettin’ possum, I’m always at home with our son
Boo-Radley, and you ain’t got no reason to think I’m
with Harley! I swears its true. Besides, I don’t find
him attrackertive.
Let’s Bring
Him OUT!
•
Ray-john-bob says you have been sleeping around
with Harley, his best friend, and that Harley has the
same eyes as Turlina.
Let’s Bring
Him OUT!
•
Ray-john-bob says you have been sleeping around
with Harley, his best friend, and that Harley has the
same eyes as Turlina.
•
“Ray-john-bob, I would never sleep with your wife!
Turlina is so darn cute, but she ain’t mine!”
Let’s Bring
OUT DR.
Jen E. Ticks!
•
There will only be one way for you to have peace of
mind, Ray-john-bob. And that’s to have the results of
blood tests done by our resident liferuiner…er…doctor, Dr. Jen E. Ticks.
YOU are the Doctor!
•
Mom has blue eyes,
Ray-john-bob has blue
eyes, and Harley has
brown eyes.
•
We can use a tool called
a Punnett Square to see
the probability that we
get different phenotypes
and genotypes for
offspring.
YOU are the Doctor!
•
Let’s do one for Mom
and Harley.
•
What are the chances
of making a blue-eyed
baby?
YOU are the Doctor!
•
NOT SO FAST!
There’s another
possibility.
•
Ray-john-bob has
brown eyes, which
means he could be
Bb, or BB.
YOU are the Doctor!
•
Let’s do one for Mom
and Ray-john-bob.
•
What are the chances
of making a blue-eyed
baby?
ARE NOT
THE
FATHER!
•
So let’s hear the results of the tests for Turlina. Rayjohn-bob… You…
•
I knewed it! Oh no this is turrible. But at least I got
my baby boy.
•
Not so fast, Ray-john-bob. Eye color can’t determine
Boo-radley. There is a chance that Harley could be
the dad. So, we need to do more testing.
YOU are the Doctor Again!
•
It’s possible that Harley
could be the dad still. So,
let’s look at another trait.
Chin cleft!
•
Chin cleft is dominant, no
cleft is recessive.
•
Mom has no cleft, Rayjohn-bob has a cleft, and
Harley has no cleft. Booradley also has a cleft.
•
Who is the father?
Ok, let’s
hear the
results….
•
For Boo-radley’s test results…Ray-john-bob….
You…
ARE the
father!
•
“Yay! Boo-radley, I’ll always love you. And Mary-sueroberta, even though you’s a cheatin’ skunk, I wants
to work it out. I’ll raise Turlina like mines own. And
Harley, if I ever sees you again, I’ll feed you to the
possums.”
Final
Thoughts.
•
Family is a weird thing. Especially this one. No
matter how different we may look on the outside, we
may all be the same on the inside…well, not the
exact same. So never judge a book by its cover! You
may not know who your daddy is, and other stuff like
that. So long!
