tasks to motivate students in the
ESP class
Yeh, Ching-Yi
English for Biotechnology
• Four Units:
1.Genetic Engineering (human genes, designer baby,
gene patenting)
2.Influenza

4.Great Discoveries (Antibiotic, H. Pylori)
Text-based Materials
• Pre-discussion (elicit background knowledge related to the content)
• Vocabulary

To motivate students…….
Authentic materials and tasks are designed!
“ Authentic materials engage both the learners’ and teachers’
attention in the language being taught (Oguz and Bahar, 2008) .
Why do I use authentic materials?
Berardo (2006:64) lists the advantages of using authentic materials as
follows:
• Having a positive effect on student motivation;
• Giving authentic cultural information;
• Exposing students to real language;
• Relating more closely to students’ needs
•Supporting a more creative approach to teaching
Authenticity?
• Not only reside in materials that are authentic
• To create an authentic situation
• To consider the selection of the context of teaching and activities

• ( I will show the audience the activity on Moodle. How to design the
activity sheet, how to guide the students listening to the 17-minute
show, and what extra resource was given to the slower learners will
be introduced. Also, few students’ work can be demonstrated.)

Worksheet
• ( I will show the audience how to use this platform in class and for
homework. Also, how to design the activity sheet and how to help the
slower learners use this authentic material will be introduced. Few
students’ activity sheets can be demonstrated.)
