Late 1600s – treatment was advocated

institutionalization

 Hemiplegia – one side of the body is affected
 Paraplegia – only legs are affected
 Tetraplegia (formerly called quadriplegia) –
involves all limbs and trunk of the body
 Diplegia – both legs or both arms are affected

Epilepsy (seizure disorder)

1) tonic-clonic – person stiffens, loses
consciousness, falls, and arms and legs
contract
2) absence (ab-sawnce) seizures – lasts up to
30 seconds; mistaken for daydreaming.
