Why?
2. What happened to the petunia? Why?
3. What analogy is used for DNA?
4. What analogy is used for mRNA?
5. What analogy is used for the ribosome?
6. What does RNAi stand for?
7. What disease is being studied using RNAi?
8. What analogy is used for a virus

DNA vs. RNA
How are DNA & RNA
different?

Tools
• DNA
• RNA
o tRNA
o rRNA
o mRNA
o RNAi
• Amino Acids: building blocks of proteins (come from your
food)
• Enzymes
Steps of Protein Synthesis

Protein Synthesis Animation
1. Transcription: DNA is used to make mRNA
2. Translation: mRNA is used as the code for amino acid
sequence (protein)
Transcription
4 &7
Happens in the nucleus
1. Helicase unzips the DNA
2. RNA polyermase reads the DNA from 3' to 5'
3. RNA polymerase makes a mRNA (messenger RNA) in the 5'
to 3' direction (A, U, C, G)
4. mRNA leaves the nucleus through nuclear pore
Transcription
5
Translation
4
Happens in the ribosomes within in the cytoplasm
1. mRNA enters the rRNA and is matched with a tRNA
2. tRNA transfers the correct amino acid
3. after all the mRNA has tranferred throught the ribosome
Translation
