Misconceptions About Protein
Think Fitness:
Can Eating Extra Protein Make Muscles Grow Larger?
No
Hard work, not excess dietary protein, is the trigger for
the genes to build more muscle tissue
 Exercise generates cellular messages that stimulate DNA
to begin the process of building up muscle fibers
 A snack rich in both protein and carbohydrate eaten
directly after exercise may help in this regard

Another false claim
 Predigested proteins (amino acid supplements) are
“easy to digest” and can therefore protect the digestive
system from “overworking”
 The healthy digestive system handles whole proteins
better than predigested ones
Should Liz Follow a High Protein Diet?
 Liz is a 20-year-old who is 5 feet 2 inches tall and
weighs 103 pounds. She is following her dream of
becoming a professional dancer, which means she has a
"very active" activity level.
 She knows she is not overweight by health charts; but
she can't help comparing herself to the other dancers,
who all seem leaner.
 Her friend Silvie has been successful in losing weight
and gaining muscle while following a high-protein diet.
Liz decides to try it.
Should Larry Follow a High Protein Diet?
 Larry is a 30 year old who is 5’10” tall and weighs 185
pounds. He is a stock trader by day and a competitive
body builder by night.
 He recently had his body fat tested and the results
showed 8% body fat. His coach would like him to lower
his body fat to 5%.
 He has read in muscle magazines that if he wants to
build more muscle and cut his body fat he should eat a
high protein diet.
Discussion
 Give Liz and Larry your opinion on whether they
should follow this diet. You must justify your answer.
 Liz and Larry are beginning to understand how this
type of diet does not meet their needs as athletes.
Identify recommended carbohydrate and protein
needs for an athlete such as Liz and Larry, and then
calculate their needs based on age, gender, and body
weight
