Artistic Ideals of the
Renaissance
Before we view any of the images, we
must learn how. This is the process that
we will use ALL YEAR for looking at any
image:
• Step 1: What is physically in the image? (Who?,
What?, Where?, what are the actions taking
place?)
• Step 2: Is there a bias in the image? Do you
think that the artist has a certain perspective?
• Step 3: What do you believe is the message that
the image is trying to convey?
• Step 4: Do you agree with the message? Why or
Why not?
Every step requires you to use evidence or
examples FROM THE IMAGE to prove your point
Let’s Practice! Analyze the
following image from the Middle
Ages using our Steps:
A little more practice:
• GREAT JOB analyzing the previous image.
• Now take a look at the next few images, from
•
the Middle Ages, and see if you can figure out
some common characteristics of Medieval art.
Create a spider chart to record your ideas about
the characteristics of art in the Middle Ages
What are the characteristics of
art in the Middle Ages?
What are the characteristics of
art in the Middle Ages (cont.)?
The Middle Ages
• Art in the Middle Ages:
– Focused mainly on Christian religious figures,
beliefs, ideas, and events.
– Paintings and tapestries were flat and two
dimensional (little background and
foreground).
– Did not emphasize realistic human bodies or
facial expressions.
Some of you might be asking, at
this point:
“Hey wait a second! I thought we were
talking about art during the Renaissance?
Why are we wasting so much time still
taking about the Middle Ages?”
Because:
Before we can understand the important
changes that occur in Renaissance culture
and society we need to understand what
came before it. So without further ado, My
Lords & Ladies…
THE RENAISSANCE
Please feel free to cheer and applaud….(or I’ll fail you)
Ideals and Techniques of
Renaissance Art
1. Humanism- A philosophy that although God created
the earth, it was people that continued to improve and
develop it. Humanism focused on the potential and
achievements of people rather than on God or
religion. Also a rediscovery of the culture and learning
of Classical scholars (ancient Rome & Greece)
2. Secularism- A belief that excludes religion or religious
meaning. Secularism is concerned with the present
and not with the “afterlife”.
3. Realism- painters and sculptors depict subjects as
they may be seen in life. Paintings have depth and
great detail is paid to facial expressions.
