The Worst
Additives
Additives permit longer shelf
lives and cheaper ingredient
costs, which mean increased
profits for food
manufacturers. The vast
majority of them are safe. But
some are not.....
Here are the
worst additives
Acesulfame -K
 It
is a sugar substitute used in
soft drinks and baked goods.
 The additive causes cancer in
animals. And that means it
may increase the canser risk to
humans.
Artificial colors E100-199



The color of a soft drink or other foods rarely comes
from the food itself. Artificial colors, which may be
naturally derived or synthetic, are much cheaper.
It is in every kind of food most wanted by children – it
colours drinks, lollies, chips – so it is almost impossible
to avoid.
Naturally derived colorants like beta-carotene (which is
used to color margarine) and beet-juice extract haven`t
generally been well tested, but we presume them to be
safe. Most food, though, is colored with combinations of
synthetic dyes like Blue No.2, Green No.3, Red No.40,
etc.
Aspartame E951


It is used in soft drinks. It is sweeter than
sugar 180 times.
Aspartame might cause altered brain
function and behavioral changes.
Hundreds of people have said they suffer
from dizzines, headaches, epileptic-like
seizures.
BHA and BHT



BHA and BHT are two closely related
chemicals that prevent oxidation and
retard rancidity in foods that contain oil.
They may cause canser.
The bottom line is that BHA and BHt are
unneccessary. There are safer ways to
prolong the shelf like foods.
Caffeine



Caffeine is a stimulant and one of the drugs that
are added to foods. It is found naturally in tea,
coffee, and cocoa. It is also added to many soft
drinks.
It can cause nervousness, nausea, and
insomnia.Caffeine also makes stomach acid
increase and raises blood pressure, makes some
blood vessels open wider and others narrow.
One good thing about caffeine: it doesn`t
appear to initiate or promote cancer.
Monosodium Glutamate,
MSG,621


MSG 621 is a sodium salt of the amino
acid knowm as glutamic acid. It is added
in processed foods. Such as spices,
flavourings, bouillon, etc.
Too much monosodium glutamate can
lead to headaches, migraines, stomach
upset, tightness in the chest, shortness of
breath, heart palpilations, partial paralysis.
Nitrite and Nitrate


Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate are two
chemicals used for centuries to preserve
meat. They maintain the red color,
comtribute to the flavor, and inhibit the
growth of botulism-causing bacteria.
Nitrite has long been suspected as being
cause of stomach cancer.
Sweeteners E900-E999




It is a substitute which contains no sugar
and is used as a sweetener for different
products.
They are much sweeter than sugar so
they are cheap for manufactorers to use.
One of the sweeteners is saccharin used
for diet drinks and products.
Sweeteners may cause cancer. They are
not recommended for children.
Sulfites


Sulfites are a class of chemicals that keep
cut fruits and vegetables looking fresh.
They also prevent discolouration in
apricots, raisins, and other dried fruits,
fresh-cut potatoes, bacterial growth, and
fermentation of wine.
Sulfites can provoke sometimes allergic
reactions.
The Parabens 212, 213, 214, 215,
216, 217, 218, 219



The parabens are a group of preservatives that
contain ‘ben’from benzoic acid, 212 and prefixes
like methyl-, propyl-, and butyl-.
They can cause severe contact dermatitis or
redness, skin pain, asthme attacks and
anaphylactic shoch in susceptible persons.
They are the most common preservatives used
in foods, medications and make – up. Such
foods as baked goods, frozen dairy products,
fruit juices, jams and jellies, processed
vegetables, salad dressings, soft drinks and
syrups.
