JAMA’s Position on Sulfur Reduction

JAMA’s Stance
•JAMA strongly supports this activity to achieve clean air
through improving fuel quality.
•Improving fuel quality is essential in order to introduce lower
emission vehicles equipped advanced after treatment
technology such as 3WAY catalyst and CRDPF, and EGR
system etc.
•Especially, eliminating lead from gasoline and lowering sulfur
in gasoline and diesel fuel are the most important issue.
•Ash forming octane booster should not be allowed.

Lowering sulfur in gasoline leads to lowering exhaust emissions
from the all vehicles equipped three way catalyst systems.

Sulfur impact on Emissions
Sulfur effects on NOx catalyst performance is significant. Sulfur
free is essential to introduce this kind of system that achieves low
emissions and low fuel economy (low CO2).

Sulfur impact on Emissions
Fuel sulfur has also effects of PM from the engine installed

Other impact of Sulfur
•Fuel sulfur promotes to produce sulfated ash on the DPF and
then plugged it. This caused detelioration of fuel economy and
lowering engine durability.
•Fuel sulfur increases cylinder bore wear in the engine equipped
EGR system to reduce NOx and shortens engine durability.
•When fuel sulfur in diesel fuel was reduced, lubricty is also
lowered at the same time. This causes fuel pump wear. Lubricity
improver should be added as fuel sulfur was reduced.
•Lowering sulfur reduces SOx emissions that is a cause of acid
rain.
