Life without Oxygen
Creatine Phosphate
• Creatine phosphate can donate its phosphate
to ADP
– Result is one ATP and one creatine
• Fastest energy, but only for 15-20 seconds
• No oxygen required (or glucose)
Lactic Acid Fermentation
• Occurs when supplies of oxygen are low
(compared to muscle activity)
• Pyruvic acid cannot enter aerobic
respiration, converts to lactic acid
• Produces 2 ATP per glucose and lactic acid
• Energy lasts 30-60 seconds
Why?
• Less than 5% as productive as aerobic
respiration
• But almost 3 times as fast
• Provides energy for strenuous activity
• Any activity lasting more that 60 seconds
requires oxygen
– Pace yourself!
Lactic Acid
• Promotes fatigue and muscle soreness
• After activity, body uses oxygen to break
down the lactic acid
• Activity creates an “oxygen debt” that must
be “repaid”
– Heavy breathing after activity

Oxygen required
Slowest of the 3, but can last for hours
36 ATP per glucose
Water and carbon dioxide are wastes
