Volcanoes
By Melanie Brady and Cam Colby
The basics of volcanoes




The three different types of
volcanoes are cinder cones,
composite volcanoes, and lava
domes.
They can be classified by their
activity, their violence, or their
relationships.
Some can be different by the
fact that some volcanoes have
more activity than others.
They can also be different by
how much damage they can
cause or some volcanoes even
can erupt in different places.

The anatomy of a volcano
The side of a volcano
is called the flank
 The “mouth” of a
volcano is the crater
 The entrance is the
throat

How do volcanoes erupt?
Volcanoes occur when
magma is derived
from the partial
melting of the subducting oceanic plate
and partial mixing
with materials from
the overriding plate.
 The magma rises
from the cracks in the
crust.

Why do volcanoes occur?
Plate tectonics can
help us understand
this.
 Plate tectonics are the
study of the action of
the plates in the
earths crust.

Volcanic hazards






Some hazards
include:
Gases
Landslides
Acid rains
Floods
Climatic changes

Where do volcanoes occur?
They only occur in
certain places and do
not occur randomly.
 They mostly occur on
plate boundaries.
 They also can occur
in “rings of fire” or
areas with a lot of
active volcanoes..

Mt. Vesuvius
It is considered one
of the worlds worst
volcanoes
 Its most famous
eruption was in AD 79
in Pompeii
 It is estimated that it
killed over 2,000
people

Mt. St. Helens
Most famous eruption
was on May 18th,
1980
 Killed 57 people,
destroyed 250 homes,
47 bridges, 15 miles
of railway and 185
miles of highways
 It is located in
Skamania county,
Washington state

More facts about volcanoes



Some volcanoes result
from “hot spots” in the
earths mantle.
Some volcanoes can
cause hot springs if
magma goes into contact
with groundwater.
Rock and other materials
formed from lava can
create a variety of
landforms.

What are the early warning signs of
volcanoes?
•
•
•
•
•
Earthquakes
Mountains collapsing
Ash
Mudflows
Tephra- solid matter
that is ejected in the
air by a volcano

What was the first recorded
volcanic eruption?

It was in Turkey in a
painting in a house
and would have been
made around 6200
BC.
