…About Georgia Intern-Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT)
• Founded in 1991, GIFT provides paid 4-7 week STEM
summer internships for elementary, middle and high
school science, mathematics and technology teachers.
• Teacher internships include academic research in
university laboratories, and industry assignments in
businesses. Action (i.e. Lesson) Plans are subsequently
developed to transfer internship experiences into
classroom teaching.
• GIFT places an average of 75-80 teachers a summer.

Protein structure and function: A multimedia-based inquiry
education module for the high school science classroom
• The educational module is designed to achieve three goals.
Improve students capacity
for scientific investigation.
Improve their conceptual grasp Inspire the next
of protein structure and
generation of scientists.
function.
• Plan and conduct a lab
investigation.
• Practice with authentic
tools for biochemical
research (PDB and Pymol).
• Discuss the relationship
between protein structure
and drug design.
• The central dogma of
molecular genetics.
• Mutations can lead to
changes in protein, which can
cause genetic disorders.
• Proteins have 3-dimensional
shapes. 1o, 2o, 3o, 4o levels of
structure.
• How structure is related to
function.
• How structure is determined.
• Expose them to
techniques that mirror
what is done in current
research.
• Make them more
prepared to succeed in
college biochemistry.

% of Correct Responses
• More than 400 students in 6 AP biology, 2 IB biology, 1 AP chemistry and 4
general chemistry courses.
• In each case, the number of students responding correctly dramatically improved.
Question Number
Other projects
• We have created 2 other educational modules that are
being used (although not published).
• Not Your Grandfather’s Hemoglobin
– Improving students understanding of evolution.
– Demonstrating how to collect and analyze
biochemical evidence.
• Think Like a Scientist
– Improving students capacity for experimentation.
– Re-defining the scientific approach to problem
solving.
