Urea Kinetic Modeling: Made easy
Dr
Introduction

Urea, as has been widely shown,


Is not a toxic material
However, it is a surrogate for a number of
materials


That accompany protein intake and metabolism,
and which have been long postulated to be factors
in uremia—
Consequently using the quantitative analysis of
production and removal of urea (which is urea
kinetic modeling)

Provides a useful tool to assess the patient and his or her
therapy


Urea kinetic modeling

A particularly useful aspect is also the
ability to

Predictably modify treatment, eliminating the
need for a trial and error approach to
prescribing desired treatment

Introduction

Urea kinetic modeling yields:

A quantitative measure of the level of
protein intake and accompanying
substances


(e.g., P, K, acid, other catabolites, some of
which—i.e., middle molecules—have been
postulated as uremic toxins)
An evaluation into whether the expected
treatment is actually being delivered—Kt/V

Introduction

Urea kinetic modeling yields:

A means to evaluate why treatment is not
being delivered as intended and what
therapeutic maneuvers will be successful to
address these issues

This aspect of urea kinetics can then be a
powerful tool in CQI programs
