• Both have similar sounding scientific
names but are completely different
substances.
• Methadone is a pharmaceutical drug
typically used as a very strong painkiller
or to treat heroin addicts.

• A powerful stimulant
• Mephedrone is a Class B drug – so it’s
illegal to have for yourself, give away
or sell.
• Possession is illegal and can get you up
to five years in jail and/or an
unlimited fine.
• Supplying someone else, even your
friends, can get you fourteen years in
jail and/or an unlimited fine.
So what does it do?
• It can make users feel alert, confident, talkative and
euphoric – and some people will temporarily feel strong
affection to those around them
• It can make users feel sick, paranoid and anxious, and it can
cause vomiting and headaches.
• It risks overstimulating and damaging the heart and
circulation.
• It also risks overstimulating the nervous system, which may
cause hallucinations, feelings of agitation and even fits.

So should it be legal or illegal?
• Eric Carlin resigned from the Advisory Council
on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) because of the
way Mephedrone had been criminalised.
• He believed there was no discussion on how this
drug should be classified and that the panel of
the ACMD gave in to political and media
pressure.
• Should Mephedrone be legal or illegal? Is it
