Who Does it Effect?
• 219 million effected on average
every year
• Women, children, and HIV/AIDs
victims
• Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa
40% of the world’s population
is at risk.
More Than Just A
Death Rate
• 60% of children’s schooling might be impaired
because of absenteeism due to malaria
• Compared to healthy families, malaria-stricken
families only harvest 40% of their crops
• A quarter of a families income is spent on
malaria treatment
• On average, malaria costs the continent of
Africa $12 billion dollars a year
Prevention
• Anti-malarials
• Newest drug, artemisinin-based combination
therapy (ACT) costs $2.00-$2.50 for an adult
• Bed-nets
• Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and long-lasting
insecticidal nets (LLINs)
• Can reduce illness by at least 50%
• It’s all about education and awareness
