Vocabulary
• British East India Company
A company that was responsible for half of the world’s trade and was in
charge of India at one point. The company had private armies and used brutal
tactics to make money.
• Opium
A highly addictive drug produced from the poppy plant. It is similar to heroin
but usually smoked not injected.
Early Trade
• Largely self sufficient
• Portuguese arrive in 1557
• British arrive in 1635
• Trade kept to a few port cities
Opium Trade
• EIC sees potential profit
• Chinese and British smugglers
• Banned in 1799
• By 1838, 12 million addicts

give up the Opium trade
