Fashion Sub-cultures

The Mods (The Modernists)
 Originated in London in the late 1950’s
but popularised in 1960’s.
 Working class seen as imitating middle
class
 Associated with drug fuelled partying
(amphetamines)
 Hang out in coffee shops where Mods
were able to play their own records.
 Travelled on scooters for their
practicality
 Conflicts with the Rockers who were
likened to louts.

Fashion
 Adopted Italian and French styles
 Sophisticated tailored made suits with narrow lapels,
thin ties, button-down collars, pointed leather shoes,
Chelsea boots, Clarks desert boot
 Fish tail parka originally created for soldiers in the
Korean war
 Female mods dressed androgynously with short hair,
men’s clothing, flat shoes with minimal make-up.
 Ben Sherman designs often feature the Royal Air Force
Symbol which can also be identified as the Mod symbol

Music
 Music: Pop, soul, ska, British beat
music and R&B.
 Mods were attracted to ska music because it
was secret, underground and had not reached
commercial channels.
