The Assignment
11
The Assignment
• First, read Angell’s article, The Crazy State of
Psychiatry”
• Second, read over Sally Small’s commentary
• Third, “In a five-to-seven page paper defend,
refute, or qualify Small’s statement.”
12
Sally Small’s Comments
1. If what Angell writes is correct, she is far too
lame about what ought to be done to
remedy the unholy alliance of psychiatrists
and pharmaceutical companies.
2. The response of the FDA has actually made
the problem worse by concealing the true
nature of drug trials.
13
Sally Small’s Comments
3. Both psychiatrists and drug companies must
face more severe penalties for their
questionable practices.
4. After writing a searing indictment, Angell
settles for very mild remedies for the abuses
she describes.
14
The Assignment (continued)
• Investigate the charges that Small has made
and offer substantial reasons for whatever
judgment you make of Small’s opinion.
• A good paper will focus on one facet of
Angell’s indictment to show whether Small is
correct in her judgment when that facet is
considered
15
The Assignment (continued)
• Compile a working bibliography of ten sources
that you might use in this paper
• Include
– Four citations to peer-reviewed journal articles
– A book
– Magazine or newspaper articles and websites.
16
Before you start searching…
• Identify a research question/topic …
– What question do you want to ask/answer?
– Make a list of key terms and synonyms …
– You can revise it as your search progresses …

interlibrary loan ILL)
• Don’t forget to get the citations
27
Academic Search Premier
28
Databases
(also called article databases, index or index/abstract databases)
