TOBACCO
WHAT IS TOBACCO?
• A green, leafy plant
• Can be used in different ways
• Smoked in a cigarette, cigar or pipe
• Chewed (smokeless tobacco)
NICOTINE
• Chemical found in tobacco that makes it
addictive
• A stimulant
• Makes tobacco a drug
• Raises blood pressure and makes the heart
beat faster
DANGERS OF SMOKING
• Over 4,000 different toxins in a single cigarette
• Cigarette smoking causes about 1 in every 5
deaths in the U.S. each year
• Tobacco use is the #1 preventable cause of
disease and death in the U.S.
SMOKELESS TOBACCO
A.K.A. CHEW, SPIT, DIP, SNUFF/SNUS
• Tobacco that is not burned (smoked).
• Placed in the mouth and “chewed” or sucked
• Juices are spit out
• Nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the
mouth
Black and Mild
• Cigar made of pipe tobacco
• More nicotine and tobacco than a cigarette
• Even if not inhaled, nicotine is absorbed
through the lining of the mouth
• Expose esophagus, larynx, tongue, mouth and
lips to toxic chemicals
Secondhand Smoke
• At least 69 toxic chemicals are cancer causing
• Causes lung cancer, heart disease and asthma
in non-smokers
• Harm a child’s growth and development
• There is no safe level of exposure to
secondhand smoke!
