Alcohol Myths and Misconceptions 1. A can of beer is less intoxicating than a shot of whiskey. FALSE!! What Equals One Drink? All types of alcohol contains ½ ounce of alcohol by volume. FERMENTATION – Yeast + Sugar > CO2 + Alcohol Wheat, corn, barley, hops, grapes, sugar cane and yeast! Yeast reacts with the sugars in fruit or grain. The by product is carbon dioxide and alcohol. 2. A drunk person can sober up quickly by taking a cold shower or drinking coffee. FALSE!! The only thing that can sober someone up is time 3. Alcohol is considered a drug. TRUE! A drug is any substance that alters the way the mind or body naturally functions. 4. Alcohol is considered a stimulant. FALSE!! Alcohol is considered to be a depressant. Depressants slow down the body systems and the central nervous system functions. (ex: slower reaction time or motor functions) 5. If you drink an energy drink prior to consuming alcohol you will not get drunk as quickly. FALSE!! What Happens When They Mix?? Energy drinks contain caffeine which is a stimulant but also know that alcohol is a depressant. How could this be dangerous?! ADDITIVE EFFECT! This is when you mix drugs of different classifications together. The opposite would be if you mixed drugs of the same classification, this is consider SYNERGISTIC EFFECT. 6. There was a time in U.S. history when alcohol was banned and considered illegal! TRUE!! This time period was called the PROHIBITION. During this time it was illegal to sell, product, import, consume, or transport alcohol beverages. The time this occurred was 1920-1933. 7. Alcohol is found in products such as cologne, mouth wash, cough syrup, and hair spray. TRUE!! Ethyl Alcohol: Alcohol we can consume. Found in beer, wine, and distilled alcohol. Methyl Alcohol: Alcohol found in the products such as cologne. This form of alcohol we cannot consume. 8. If a woman decides to consume alcohol while she is pregnant, this could cause harm to her unborn child. TRUE! Drinking to get drunk is a sure way to make friends. FALSE!! 10. There are support groups available for recovering alcoholics. TRUE These programs are called Alcoholic Anonymous (aka A.A). This is usually a 12 step program that meets with others suffering from the same illness. This group lives by a strict code that what ever is discussed in these groups will not be discussed outside of them.
