Special Relevance to WFBMC
• Approximately 200 patients per day in WFBMC
with substance-related complications
• 30% of hospital admissions are alcohol/drug
related
• 45% of ED admissions are alcohol/drug related
DSM-V: The essential feature of a substance use disorder is a cluster of
cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms indicating that the
individual continues using the substance despite significant substancerelated problems.
Suboxone outsells Aderall and Viagra
SPECIFIC AIMS
1. To provide a novel mechanism of interaction among NIDA investigators at
WFU to examine neurobiological mechanism of cocaine pharmacotherapies.
2.
To provide a formal structure of collaborative interactions between our
Center and our clinical partners at NIDA-funded clinical centers.
3.
To provide a focus for the training of students and postdoctoral fellows in
contemporary methods for investigating the neurobiological basis of drug
abuse.
4.
To serve as an informational source to both the lay and scientific community
on issues related to the neurobiology of drug abuse.

The Specific Aims are:
1. To solicit and review pilot project proposals.
2. To provide mentorship to ensure further training and career
development of investigators receiving pilot funds, particularly
new and early stage investigators.
3. To provide support for highly innovative preliminary studies
from established investigators.
4. To encourage submission of R01 or other grant applications
based on results from pilot studies.
