 A reaction that takes place over a relatively long period of
time
• Birth Defects (FAS-Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)
• Malnutrition(would rather drink than eat)
• Sexual Problems
• Family and friends (failure to keep promises, trouble with
money and the law, aggressive behavior)
• Strange or unreasonable fear
• Liver Disease (Cirrhosis-scaring of the liver)
• Depressant (Problems at work, home, etc.)
• Brain damage (alcohol disrupts parts responsible for
memory and problem solving)
Drugs/Alcohol
What is it?
• Drug- a substance other than food that changes
the structure of function of the body or mind
• Prescription Medicines- medicines that can be
sold only with a written order from a physician
• Over the Counter Medicines- medicines that are
safe enough to be taken without a written order
from a physician
• Drug Abuse- intentionally using drugs in a way
that is unhealthy or illegal
• Narcotics- specific drugs that are obtained by
prescription and are used to relieve pain

• Withdrawal Symptoms- symptoms that occur after chronic use of a
drug is reduced or stopped
• Euphoria- feeling of well being or elation because they affect the
areas of the brain that perceive pleasure
• Stimulants- drugs that speed up activity in the human brain and
spinal cord
• Amphetamine- drug that stimulates the central nervous system
• Depressant- substances that slow down normal brain function
• Hallucinogens- drugs that distort moods, thoughts and senses
• Inhalants-any substance whose fumes are sniffed and inhaled to
produce mind altering sensations
