effects.
CATEGORIES OF DRUGS
Stimulants-Increase
Activity of CNS
 Nicotine
 Tobacco
 Methamphetamines
 Cocaine
 Caffeine
Depressants-Decrease
Activity of the CNS
 Alcohol
 Tranquilizers
 Barbiturates
CATEGORIES OF DRUGS
Hallucinogens-Distort
Reality
Inhalants-Produce
Unpredictable Effects
 Lysergic Acid Diethylamide
(LSD)
 Phencyclidine (PCP)
 Whippets
 Solvents
 Paints
 Sprays
 Fuels
DRUGS THAT IMPACT THE
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM:
A. Stimulants- Increase activity of CNS
-Caffeine
-Amphetamines
-Methamphetamines (ice)
-Cocaine
B. Depressants- Decrease activity of the
CNS
-Barbiturates
-Tranquilizers
- Alcohol
C. HALLUCINOGENS
- DISTORT REALITY
- LSD

F. MARIJUANA- CLASSIFICATION
DEPENDS ON USER
-3rd most popular recreational/illicit drug
-Acts like hallucinogen in large doses

appetite and thirst, dilation of blood vessels in
the eyes, short term memory loss, muscle
weakness.

alter the user's feelings, behaviors,
perceptions and mood. This
includes stimulants, depressants,
hallucinogens, opiates, inhalants.
Medicine- heal unhealthy tissue,
ease pain, prevent illness,
diagnose health conditions.

CELLS BECOME RELIANT ON THE
DRUG.
Withdraw causes physical symptoms, sometimes life
threatening.
Tolerance- increased amount of the drug is required to
produce the same effect.
PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDENCE"THINK" THEY NEED THE DRUG
CAUSES
NO physical symptoms.

medications
Abuse- use of illicit drugs, or use of legal drugs in ways
that are detrimental to health and well being.
