The Main Idea
• Maps can be used to solve societal
problems such as AIDS
• Rephrase problems geographically
– It matters where problems occur
• Understand how culture and location
impact a country’s ability to solve
problems
• UEQ: How might societal
problems be posed so that they
are open to solution through
geographic map analysis?
• Today’s LEQ: What is GIS and
how can it be used to address
problems in society?
• What is geographic map analysis?
– Using maps to research and solve problems
that face society
What is GIS?
• “A geographic information system (GIS) is
a computer-based tool for mapping and
analyzing things that exist and events that
happen on earth.”
– GIS is the tool that allows for geographic map
analysis!
GIS Continued…
• Allows two or more maps to be laid on top
of each other so that a number of
variables can be examined together
– Helps to identify associations (correlations)
– Be careful… Associations do not imply a
cause/effect relationship (causation)
