Drug Absorption & Elimination
Suppose a drug is administered as a 100 mg dose
every 12 hours.
The rate of absorption is proportional to the amount of
the unabsorbed drug in your system.
The drug is eliminated (used) from your system at a
(different) rate proportional to the absorbed quantity in
your system.
What is the amount of the drug in your system at any
given time?
Does it settle down to an approximately constant level?
How can we compute this?
Suppose that
1. The absorption rate is 8% of free
drug per hour
2. The elimination rate is 10% of the
absorbed drug per hour
Can we find equations -- "a mathematical
model" -- to describe this situation and
determine the answers?
This model is known as the Bateman equation.
