Using an Outline
Informal or working outlines
are simply early sketches of
how you will arrange the major
sections of your paper.
Jotting down main points and a
few subpoints before you begin
can help you while you are
writing.
Sample Introductory Paragraph
Justice and rehabilitation have traditionally
been the goal of our Juvenile Justice court
system, but justice is not always served especially
in cases involving juveniles. The judiciary process
has evolved from a system that did not initially
consider juveniles to one where juveniles have
their own courts, facilities, and laws. A juvenile is
considered to be an individual under the age of 18
and resembling an adult. However, resembling an
adult does not always mean that juveniles will
have an adult mindset. Thus, juveniles may need
extra attention to help in their rehabilitation
through specialized programs involving therapy
and self-esteem enhancement.

In my opinion, people who use marijuana
recreationally would love to have the drug legally
recognized. However, those who sell the drug
would rather it not be legalized in order to
continue profiting from sales. But I also think it
is unfair to keep people in prison for using
marijuana when alcohol and tobacco have more
detrimental side effects. Also, our prisons
require space for crimes more serious than
selling or using marijuana. In this paper, I will
argue that these are the reasons why you and
others like you should advocate that marijuana
be decriminalized.

APA Documentation
To Avoid PLAGIARISM
1. Summarize
2. Paraphrase
3. Direct Quotations
APA REQUIRES
In-text citations (the 80/20 rule)
Reference page citations
A well-integrated quote is like a sandwich:
On top you have a sentence(s) of your own
which creates the context for the quote you
intend to use, then the quote (with author
tag/signal phrase), and finally a sentence of
your own that reflects back on the quote and
its significance to your argument.
*
When introducing quotes use signal
words/phrases:
According to, asserted, claimed, emphasized,
noted, observed, pointed out, suggested, wrote

One scholar argues: “A channel surfer hops back
and forth between channels because she's
bored. A Web surfer clicks on a link because
she's interested” (Johnson, 1997, p. 109).

Basic format of an APA reference
1. Author’s name (last name first, first initial).
2. Date of publication in parentheses. (n.d.)
signifies that no date is available.
3. Name of book (in italics).
4. Publication or Retrieval Information.
• Note: After every major element of an APA
citation, there is usually a period unless it is
a web address.
Honing Your Thesis Statement
1. Does your thesis take a strong stance on a
controversial issue?
2. Does your thesis answer either how or why? In
other words, does it “assert your conclusions”
about a particular topic.
3. Is your thesis limited enough that you can say
what you have to say in 5 pages?
4. Does your thesis pass the “so what,” and “duh”
tests?
