Standards for
Medicines
• All medicines in the U.S.

by the FDA.
• Drug manufactures must
complete 3 clinical trials,
including human
volunteers.
• They monitor the drug’s
effects and identify any
harmful side effects.
• The FDA does not
regulate herbal and
dietary supplements.
Prescription vs.
over-the-counter
• Prescription Medicines: are
medicines that are dispensed
only with the written
approval of a licensed
physician or nurse
practitioner.
• A prescription medicine
should be taken ONLY by the
person whose name is on the
label.
• Over-the-Counter: medicines
you can buy without a
doctor’s prescription.
• Some O.T.C.’s are kept behind
the counter depending on
their active ingredients.
These may be abused to get a
high or to make illegal drugs
Medicine
Labels
• When the FDA
approves a medicine, it
is considered safe when
used as directed.
