Rehabilitation Order (YRO)
Implementation date: 30 November 2009
Local partnership arrangements
The Youth Rehabilitation Order
● Designed to combine existing community sentences into one
generic sentence – the YRO
● Will enable sentencers to tailor sentences to individual risk and
needs
● Provides menu of interventions to tackle offending behaviour that
can be returned to on multiple occasions adapting the menu to
minimise the use of custody
● Length dependent upon what requirements are imposed but cannot
be longer than three years

What does this mean for YOTs

Together we will need to:
● Review current provision

requirements under the new arrangements

provision is available for example:
 Service level protocols

 Joint training
Activity Requirement
Who should this slide be delivered to?
Any service that the YOT uses to deliver specific activities with young people
(e.g. the Prince’s Trust)
Nature of the Requirement:
● Must participate in activities on the number of days specified in the order
(including residential activity for no longer than seven days)
● The intention of the legislation is for specific reparation type activities to be
included as part of this requirement

Unpaid Work Requirement

Nature of the Requirement:
● Must perform unpaid work for 16 and 17 years for between 40 – 240 hours
within a 12 month period
● Probation will continue to provide this service as it currently does

Attendance Centre Requirement

● The child or young person must attend an attendance centre as specified in
their Order for the number of hours specified

direction of a registered medical practitioner or a chartered psychologist with a view
to improving the young person’s mental condition

● Must submit to treatment by a qualified person to reduce or eliminate the
child or young person‘s dependency on or propensity to misuse drugs (i.e.
illegal substances)

drug in the child or young person’s body during any treatment period

young person‘s dependency on or propensity to misuse intoxicating substances (i.e.
alcohol or other substance that can be consumed or inhaled which is not a
drug/illegal substance)
