Inequalities
• In the USA ethnic groups suffer a
great deal of inequality, both socially
and economically.
• Inequality- is differences between
groups and people.
• This may be differences in income,
quality of housing, quality of
education or health.

• Social and economic inequalities are
linked but in the exam you may be
asked about them separately.
• In the USA there are major
differences between the ethnic
groups. They suffer both social and
economic inequalities.

Crime
• Serious problem in the USA, Amongst
African American community.
• 2 million prisoners over half are black
(60%)
• Living in the ghettos there are high crime
rates, a lot of gang culture, violence, drug
abuse and homicides
• Many young African Americans don’t value
education and drop out of school. Crime is
attractive as it can make easy money and is
better paying thanGlow

Health
• Some ethnic groups are healthier
than others.
• There are major differences in
health between blacks and whites.
• Differences in Life expectancy
rates.
• Differences in Birth Weights.
• Differences Infant Mortality rates.

• Many ethnic minorities don’t have
medical insurance and rely on
medicaid.
• Major differences in numbers
without insurance between blacks
and whites.

Housing
• Homelessness is a big problem
particularly amongst the African
Americans.
• More whites own homes than blacks.
Many blacks cannot afford a
mortgage because they have low
incomes.

Education
• Blacks brought up in the ghetto
suffer great educational
disadvantage.
• Many blacks have poor attitudes to
education therefore there is a high
drop out rate and high absenteeism in
the inner city schools.

• Poorly resourced schools, as a result
of the ‘white flight’.
• Asians tend to do better in education
compared to all ethnic groups more of
them enter university and graduate
from university than any other group.

Family Structure
• High numbers of single parent
families within the African American
community.
• 79% of white children are raised in
two parent families, the African
American figure is less than 30%
