Depression
Depression is the feeling of sadness, grief,
hopelessness, helplessness, and guilt
The Disorder is extremely intense and
prolonged
The Illness has serious affects on the
mental and physical well being of a
person.
Clinical Depression
Clinical Depression can affect your body,
mood, thoughts, and behavior.
The explanation of Clinical Depression is an
imbalance in certain chemical messengers
called two neurotransmitters called
noradrenaline and serotonin
How many Americans suffer from
Depression
Over 19 Million American adults suffer
from depression every year.
Out of the 19 Million who will suffer from
depression next year, 30% of them will be
college freshman
If these cases of Depression go untreated
it may lead to 1) Eating Disorders 2)
Alcohol and drug abuse and/or even
suicide
What causes Depression within
college students
New living arrangements
Academic Pressure
New Financial Responsibilities
Changes in relationships with family and
friends
The need to monitor one’s schedule and
tend to one’s own needs
Signs of Depression
Change in appetite
Thoughts of death, suicide or suicide
attempts.
Restlessness and/or irritability
Trouble concentrating, remembering,
and/or making decisions
Fatigue or lack of energy
Insomnia, waking up early or oversleeping
Treatments for depression
Medication
Electroconvulsive
Therapy (ECT)
Psychotherapy or
Group Therapy
