Steps to Planning and Designing
Your Message
 Content: Develop a core message
 Mood: Consider the emotions you want to appeal
to in order to convey your message
 Form of communication: Select an appropriate
form of communication for your message
How can I create an effective Distracted
Driving message that teens will actually
pay attention to?
Things to consider:
What do teens care about?
What kind of message will make them reconsider
their safety behaviors in regards to Distracted
Driving?
What kind of message will make them change
the way they do things when driving?
Take Caution!
 All data MUST be properly referenced
 Make sure any information you provide is credible - do
your research!
 Avoid any kind of “preachy” tone
 When using strong emotions to convey a message, make
sure your content is not too extreme
 Target audience can have a defensive response or become
emotionally burnt out and will not receive the intended
message
