HISTORY
• The earliest known ancient civilization in Bolivia was the Tiwanakan
culture which was around 2000 BC.
• In the 15 century, the Incan Empire entered into Bolivia. They were the
dominant culture until the Spanish arrived in 1525.
• The Bolivians lived under Spanish rule for almost 300 years, however, in
1809 they declared their independence. They fought the Spanish for
another 16 years until they became the Republic of Bolivia on August 6,
1825.
• The country was named after the great liberator and general Simon
Bolivar.
• The 1900s have been filled with revolution and turmoil for the country of
Bolivia. There have been many changes in leadership, the type of
governments, attempts at democracy, and military coups over the last
50 years.

 Journalist need to be licensed in order to operate
 Freedom of the press remains compromised by
inadequate legal guarantees.
 The constitution provides for freedom of speech
and of the press, but Bolivia's penal code stipulates
that journalists can be jailed for one month to two
years if found guilty of slandering, insulting, or
defaming public officials.
 When the infractions involve the president, vice
president, or a minister, the sentence may be
increased by half.

• There are nearly 200 privately owned television stations, but because
rural regions of the country have few televisions and television
reception is poor in many areas of the country, radio and newspaper
remains an important news disseminator.
• At last count, Bolivia had more than 480 radio stations, most of which
were regional in scope.
• Bolivia also has eight national newspapers, to go along with many local
ones.

Safety
• For Journalist in Bolivia, their
safety is not at big risk but
like any job, it can run
danger. Therefore, journalist
must have a life insurance;
which has to be paid every
25th of the month. If it is not
paid. They will face a fine by
the government.

• According to Reporters Without
Borders, the regulations specified
that journalists would not be held
responsible for reporting racist
messages as part of “their
coverage of a development.”
• The law does empower the
authorities to shut down news
outlets and arrest journalists for
published material that they deem
to be racist, potentially hindering
freedom of information and
opinion.

• Eritrea is a country in Africa. It is bordered by Sudan in the
