Introduction to 4-H Key milestones
 Registered as Non-Profit in Tanzania in 1993 (compliance
2006)
 Founded about 30 years ago by volunteer
 Use international concept used by 4H youth members
organizations in over seventy countries
 Operates in nine regions of Tanzania
 Member base (more than 43000 members in 840 clubs
 80% rural areas and farms; 18% small cities and towns; 2%
urban (peri-urban and urban)

 Supported by 1654 volunteers (860 women, 794 men)
 32 District Advisors paid by local govt.
 Partner with Education Department of LGA to oversee
clubs and train volunteers/ club advisors
 Hq in Tanga city (5 acres land with a structures) with youth
centre in construction in Morogoro
 Promotes “LEARNING BY DOING” and “EARNING BY
LEARNING” to members

 Partnership with Government of Tanzania through LGA (councils

Ministry of Education provides 1650 volunteer teachers time Approximate value of

4-H is operating using District offices and other facilities

 4-H members have established more than 36000 individual projects and more
than 2000 club projects
 Club members have managed to generate the profit of more than Tshs
176,000,000 within three month in agriculture, animal husbandry, home
economics, forestry and home craft. This is a contribution to GDP
 Club projects have managed to make a profit of more than 17,500,000 Tshs
within 3month period

 More than 445,000 trees have been planted in December 2012

 More than 10000 4-H members have been trained and conversant
with life skills together with more than 65000 non 4-H members in
Tanga and Morogoro Regions through 4-H youth to youth peer
education project

 Establishment of 32 girls clubs for girls working in an informal sector
with more than 870 girls members






450 trained as entrepreneurs
870 trained in SRH and life skills
60 as peer educators
26 clubs facilitated to start revolving fund
160 girls managed to get soft loan
250 girls consulted MFIs for loans and succeeded
Advocacy talks/issues
 Government should recognise the contribution of young people in
the National GDP.
 4-H and partners should strive to make more publicity to make
people/decision makers aware of young people’s contribution in the
national food security and environmental programmes.
 More budgetary allocation to projects targeting young people for
growing a better world.
 Involving young people in designing and developing curriculum that
suitable and applicable to them.
 Developing learning/reference materials/text that is friendly to youth
at affordable or subsidized cost.
 Encouraging
youth-adults/child-parent
support
on
youth
programming .
 Provision of safe environment for young people especially girls to
actively participate in self or joint projects.
Advocacy talks/issues
 Mobilization of information (and information exchange) across
countries and regions in order to influence and gain leverage over
more powerful organizations and governments
 Advocate for the collective regional strength to advocate for national
priorities at international level
 Bring together actors with shared ideas and values to work on a
common cause
