Construction in Europe - Key Figures
(source : FIEC www.fiec.org annual report 2007)
Estimated construction investment (EU 27 - 2006) : 1196 billion €
10,4 % of EU GDP
50,5 % of Gross fixed Capital Formation
2,7 million enterprises, of which 95% are SMEs with fewer than 20 and
93% with fewer than 10 operatives
15,2 million operatives
7,2 % of Europe`s total employment
30,4 % of industrial employment
26 million workers in the EU depend, directly or indirectly, on the construction
sector
Biggest industrial employer in Europe
Construction provides and maintains the built facilities and infrastructures
required for European Economies to function effectively, including buildings
and facilities for the delivery of public services. In doing so it accounts for
up to 10% of the EU GDP. The sector therefore has a profound influence
on European Competitiveness if its processes are efficient and reliable
overall economic competitiveness will increase.
ERA CONSTRUCTION
The ERA has become a key component of the Lisbon
Strategy for transforming Europe into the world’s most
competitive and sustainable knowledge-based economy
Since 2004, the ECTP has been contributed
successful by :
Joining forces to establish the European Research Area
(ERA) and to step up the co-ordination of research activities
carried out at National and European level.
Enhancing co-ordination of national and European
research
programmes
and
policies,
overcoming
fragmentation, and creating an “internal market” for research
it constitutes one of the central axes of the ERA concept.

Performance based buildings,
EBPD…
PUBLIC PROCUREMENT
LCC and LCA approaches
STANDARDISATION,
LABBELING, CERTIFICATION
EU standards taking into
account Sustainability
Accelerate the developments of new large scale markets with
great international potential. Better anticipate necessary legal
and regulatory changes and use existing policy mechanisms in a
more targeted and consistent manner. Design and implement
such a concerted action in a small set of “pilot” markets
SOME FUTURE STEPS
Continuing to Implement ERA in FP7 , in NMP, other
Themes and in other programmes, consolidate the PPP
in JTI/E2B in 2008, ERANET+
Better understanding expectations of Member States ,
Society, Industry & Clients & Users
Contribute to the overall EU Policies (Climate Change,
Green Procurement, ...)
Helping to shape Work Programme revisions and
increasing synergies with ECTP & ETPs SRA
Identify the potential need/possibilities for increased
cooperation (Including International)
Learn about expectations/plans for future activities, in
particular after the end of current projects
